MAURO PINTO ‘Dá Licença’ The winner of the 8th edition of BESphoto 2012 was. Mauro Pinto, of Mozambican nationality, who was distinguished for his photo series “Dá Licença” (‘Excuse me’) developed in Maputo’s Mafalala quarter. In the words of the artist, “From November 2011 to January 2012 ‘Dá Licença’ was the entry password that allowed me to carry out this photographic project in Maputo’s Mafalala quarter”. The jury unanimously chose Mauro Pinto. To justify their choice, the jury refers that “the series reveals the manner in which the artist gives himself over to the reality of the people who inhabit the spaces portrayed while at the same time conveying an historical and sociological perspective on the Mozambican contemporary reality, seen through this quarter of its capital city. (...) It is striking how the artist uses light to give life to the depicted elements. From colour to the objects themselves, his work carries us into an inhabited reality.”
